The case studies described here will give you an idea of how we work with NHS Trusts and illustrate the range of work we undertake. Further case studies will be added over time, so watch this space.
As part of our service, we have developed case studies of good practice. Case studies are based on the projects, initiatives and service improvements trusts have undertaken to bring about change.

Case Study on Children and Young People attending Emergency Departments. – Click here for the full report / Literature Search 1 / Literature Search 2
Patient Perspective submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to 38 NHS Trusts across England. The purpose of this request was to gather information on the measures and initiatives NHS Trusts have implemented to support the clinical and emotional well-being of children and young people within urgent and emergency care settings.
Also reflecting on the findings of the 2024 Children and Young People’s Survey by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the case study sets out to identify support implemented by trusts for children and young people with a mental health condition, and for autistic children and young people.
Service Improvement Case Study: Maternity Triage – Click here for the full report / Literature Search
The latest case study is based on Maternity Triage and has been compiled following the results of a Freedom of Information Request (FOI).
The FOI aimed to identify what further changes have been made since the CQC National Review of Maternity Services in England (2022–2024); to understand what training and support is offered to midwives operating the telephone triage, and what staffing levels are in place. The request also identified how many trusts have integrated evidence-based frameworks like the Birmingham Symptom-specific Obstetric Triage System (BSOTS) or similar and examples of joint working with local ambulance service providers. Response outcomes are compared to the RCOG Good Practice Paper on Maternity Triage.

Service Improvement Case Study: Urgent & Emergency Care Department – Click here for the full report
The case study highlights service improvements including waiting times and Ambulance Handover also featuring care bags for children and young people and adults with learning disability/autism.
One theme which has been raised in the National Maternity Survey comments by parents relates to support for breastfeeding including the delay in diagnosis of babies with tongue tie. This report provides examples of improvement work undertaken by some of the Trusts responding to a Freedom of Information request which asked the following questions:
- Which assessment tool is used to identify tongue tie
- Which staff perform the assessment
- What services does each trust provide and staffing
- What improvements have been made in offering parents support on tongue tie in the past 18 months because of patient feedback
40 NHS Trusts responded to the Freedom of Information request (FOI) from a sample of 50. The results of the findings have been compiled into a report.
